In reply to Shane. Good question. There are several "exceptions" built into the bill. One of them states that "Paragraph (2)‍(a) does not apply to a person who (a) owns, has the custody of or controls a cetacean that is kept in captivity at the coming into force of this section and remains continuously in captivity thereafter ..." So, while the whales and dolphins may not be bred, nor brought into the country after being taken captive elsewhere, captive facilities will be allowed to keep the animals they already have. (But as audience numbers decrease at the marine park shows, as is already happening, we look toward a time when those facilities will want to retire them to sanctuaries.) You can read the full text of the bill at http://www.parl.ca/DocumentViewer/en/42-1/bill/S-203/third-reading.

So if this passes, what will become of the whales, dolphins, belugas, etc currently in captive care? Keeping them would be deemed illegal, freeing them would likely be a death sentence.

Not trolling, not advocating captivity, just seriously asking.

S203 passed the Senate today. October 23, 2018. Now off to the House of Commons and Elizabeth May will be taking responsibility for the bill. Big day here, 3 years of working it and we finally had some success.

Thanks to the enlightened Senators Moore, Sinclair and Christmas, and we in the Animal Interfaith Alliance in Britain wish the new Bill C-68 better success when it goes through its processes.
