Amy Simon
Amy Simon is the Whale Sanctuary Project’s communications assistant in the Port Hilford area.
She lives in nearby Aspen, Nova Scotia, where she is an early childhood educator and a certified medical lab assistant. She also volunteers with a number of animal rescues and rehabilitates wildlife at her own home.
Amy’s first interaction with a beluga whale was in Chedabucto Bay, Nova Scotia, in 1998, where she met Wilma, a lone sociable orphan beluga. Although she was mesmerized by Wilma’s beauty and intelligence, she was worried for the whale’s wellbeing when she saw Wilma being attracted to the sound of boats and to people offering her food. Amy witnessed firsthand what happens when nature and humans collide.
During her interactions with Wilma, belugas carved a special spot in Amy’s heart. She is a strong animal advocate and focusing on her similarities with other animals and less on the differences allows Amy to create a bond with every animal in her care.
