Harry Rabin
Harry Rabin is a photographer/filmmaker whose career has spanned science, environment and public entertainment (award-winning films), with a notable strength in drone photography for scientific and environmental work for government ocean agencies and environmental groups.
In April 2019, he was scientific documentarian to the Whale Sanctuary Project/ Jean-Michel Cousteau team on its mission to Russia at the invitation of the Russian government to assess and make recommendations on behalf of the 10 orcas and 87 belugas at the notorious “whale jail.”
When the Deepwater Horizon was engulfed in flames and dumping millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, Harry was there to film it above and below the ocean surface alongside acclaimed cinematographer Mike deGruy. He also worked with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as a consultant for new underwater camera systems for the newly re-commissioned ALVIN DSV aboard the Atlantis R/V, and modified the existing system prior to upgrade while working onboard ATLANTIS to document damage to deep sea environment.
And when Santa Barbara was on fire (Thomas Fire, December 2017, the largest fire in California history), followed by the deadly Montecito debris flow in January 2018, he was there to film it for press and to help first responders in their work to save people.
Harry is in charge of principle photography and videography for all productions at On the WAVE Productions, and has acted as producer and/or cinematographer for numerous documentaries including Into the Shark Zone, The Night it Rained Boulders, Cry of the Wild, 45 Seconds in May, In the Path, Witness Disaster – California Mudflow, When Sharks Attack, and for news magazine shows and news segments including Dateline, Today Show, 60 Minutes, CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News.
Harry is an active and official liaison between NOAA’s Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and California Marine Sanctuary Foundation, formerly Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.
He frequently acts as technical advisor and consultant for independent and documentary films and TV series. He has designed and tested U/W video housings for numerous underwater housing manufacturers and ROVs for remote exploration and reconnaissance by the underwater film industry.
