Whale Aid, a program of the Whale Sanctuary Project, provides aid to captive and free-ranging cetaceans in need through hands-on assistance and leadership, shared expertise and education.
Whale Aid is dedicated to protecting each cetacean’s ability to thrive in a natural habitat. It is a global outreach to organizations that need assistance in their work, whether on behalf of captive whales or those who are free-ranging .
A beluga whale – one of 97 belugas and orcas who had been captured for sale to entertainment parks – is returned to the ocean.
Whale Aid programs range from rescuing and rehabilitating ocean-going whales to developing complete plans for other organizations that are working to retire captive whale and dolphins to sanctuaries. Our Whale Aid team comprises experts from around the world in fields ranging from veterinary care to transport to construction and engineering.
No single sanctuary can give a home to the hundreds of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) currently being used as a form of entertainment. And so, while our primary focus is the creation of the sanctuary in Nova Scotia, every aspect of it is designed with the larger purpose of its being a model for other and future sanctuaries around the world.
As such, the Sanctuary and our Whale Aid programs are complementary parts of our overall vision: a world where whales and dolphins are treated with respect and consideration.
