Carl Safina on the Culture of Whales and Other Animals

A conversation with famed biologist Carl Safina about his new book “Becoming Wild – How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty and Achieve Peace.”
Carl brings us close to the cultures of three non-human animals: sperm whales, scarlet macaws and chimpanzees. He offers a glimpse into what they do, why they do it, and how life is for them. He shows us how they teach and learn, and how their cultures are similar to ours in some ways and quite different in other ways.
Carl’s previous book, Beyond Words – What Animals Think and Feel took us into the world of orcas, wolves and elephants and their unique personalities as they experience joy, grief, jealousy, anger, and love. The similarity between human and nonhuman consciousness, self-awareness, and empathy calls us to re-evaluate how we interact with our fellow animals.
Carl is also a member of the board of the Whale Sanctuary Project, and in this conversation, we’ll talk with him about whales and other animals, about some of his remarkable experiences in the wild, and about what it all tells us about our own species: humans.
